Advocating for Healthy People, Animals, and Planet

In 1986, Farm Sanctuary President and Co-Founder, Gene Baur, rescued the only live sheep (later named Hilda) from an otherwise grim scene at the historic Lancaster Stockyard in Pennsylvania. Hilda's rescue was the beginning of Farm Sanctuary, the first American shelter for farm animals. Today, the organization continues to be a voice for farm animals nationwide. Over 600 rescued farm animals live at their two sanctuaries and help educate visitors about the negative impacts of factory farming on health, the planet, and social justice.
